Compressor Room Layout and Piping Design Standards, Based on GB 50029-2014 Compressed Air Station Design Code

Even with high-performance compressor units, poorly designed compressor rooms and piping systems lead to persistent overheating shutdown, excessive pressure drop, excessive noise and pipeline corrosion from accumulated water. GB 50029-2014, Code for Design of Compressed Air Stations, is the mandatory domestic reference standard for air station construction and is widely adopted by overseas engineering contractors for room design.

Hard requirements for compressor room environment: Maximum ambient temperature shall not exceed 40 ℃ while compressors are running. During non-operating shutdown periods, room temperature shall stay above 5 ℃ to avoid condensate freezing and cracking pipelines and coolers. Air intake openings shall be kept away from dust, oil fume, steam and corrosive gas. Suction piping should be short and straight to reduce intake resistance. Ventilation design is critical. Many equipment failures stem from inadequate ventilation and poor heat dissipation triggering over-temperature protection shutdown. If natural ventilation is insufficient, forced exhaust fans are required, with airflow velocity controlled at 3~10 m/s.

Noise and vibration control: Conventional screw compressors operate at 65~85 dB(A). A separate sound-insulated duty room is recommended. Vibration isolators shall be installed under compressor bases to prevent vibration transfer to building structures and precision instruments. Flexible vibration-damping connections shall be adopted between exhaust piping, air receivers and walls instead of rigid hard joints.

Core principles for air supply piping design:

  • Adopt ring main piping layout as priority, enabling bidirectional air supply to all consumption points to reduce pressure loss
  • Lay main pipes with a downward drainage gradient of 1‰~3‰ along airflow direction, and fit automatic drainers at the lowest points to trap accumulated water
  • Minimize elbows, reducers and ball valves. Each local resistance creates pressure loss. A 0.1 MPa pressure drop causes substantial long-term electricity expenditure.
  • Arrange air receivers separately. Vertical receivers shall maintain a net clearance of ≥1 m from walls for maintenance and safety valve calibration. Safety valves on air receivers are special equipment and must be calibrated annually.

Maintenance space reservation: Reserve a clearance of ≥0.8~1.2 meters around the unit as an access passage for replacing oil separators, filter elements and motor maintenance. The compressor room shall be equipped with dedicated maintenance power supply, lighting and drainage facilities, with dustproof and waterproof measures in place. Many customers only focus on main machine parameters while ignoring installation design. After commissioning, they encounter problems such as insufficient pressure, frequent overheating and noise nuisance. The rectification cost is far higher than the investment in standardized design at the early stage.
