Air Compressor Control System Upgrade Project for Oil Sands Project in Alberta, Canada

Background: For the SAGD oil sand mining project in Alberta, Canada, controllers of original air compressors were obsolete and out of production, making spare parts hard to purchase. Multiple units operated independently with poor coordinated scheduling and high system energy consumption. Controller failures would directly affect air supply for oil and gas extraction processes. Solution: Atlas Copco carried out modernization upgrade of the air compressor station control system. The Equalizer 4.0 central control system was deployed, and Mk5s new-generation controllers of all units were replaced. Unit linkage logic was optimized, core spare parts package was reserved on site, and a remote monitoring channel was established. Result: The system energy consumption was reduced by 4%, saving 701,000 kWh of electricity per year, equivalent to about 70,000 Canadian dollars annually. The risk of spare parts shortage caused by discontinued old controllers was eliminated. The linkage of units became smoother, and the risk of shutdown failures was significantly reduced. The commercial value of air compressor control upgrade in oil and gas extraction industry was verified.
