Australia · Deployment of Explosion-Proof Electric Mobile Air Compressors for Deep Underground Metal Mine

Project Background: At a deep underground metal mine in Australia, compressed air feeds rock drills, anchor bolt rigs, pneumatic breakers and tunnel instrument purging. Diesel mobile compressors were widely used previously. Diesel exhaust pollutes limited-ventilation working faces and forces higher ventilation airflow, driving huge ventilation power consumption. Underground diesel transport and storage bring strict safety control risks. As excavation advances, long fixed air pipelines suffer severe pressure loss along tunnels, resulting in insufficient power at heading faces and low drilling efficiency. The underground environment is hot and dusty, with methane hazard zones requiring equipment to comply with Australian mine explosion standards; ordinary electric compressors cannot pass site safety approval.

Solution: ANZEx certified explosion-proof variable-frequency mobile screw compressors were selected. Motors, control cabinets and pressure sensors adopt flameproof construction with strictly controlled surface temperature to avoid ignition of dust and gas. Integrated air cooling systems adapt to underground high temperature. Self-cleaning heavy-duty intake filters block rock dust. Units are deployed close to excavation faces to shorten hoses and minimize pipe pressure drop. Each mobile package is paired with compact modular drying and filtration to improve air quality and protect precision pneumatic tools. Wireless underground transmission enables remote monitoring of load, temperature and fault codes for predictive maintenance. Modular quick-disassembly design supports relocation in narrow tunnels without heavy lifting equipment.

Results: Electric drive eliminates underground diesel consumption and exhaust emissions, cutting ventilation load and power cost. Short-distance air supply removes heavy pipeline pressure loss and stabilizes drill power, boosting drilling efficiency by around 18%. Explosion-proof construction meets Australian mine safety requirements completely and removes diesel handling hazards. Mobility allows rapid relocation following working faces without repeated pipe laying and removal. Modular air treatment reduces wear of pneumatic tools and replacement frequency, providing a viable diesel-free alternative for heading air supply in deep Australian metal mines.
